Since 2016, this quartet – sometimes with guests Rim Kaboré, Nils Wekstein or Steve Heather on percussion – plays south-african jazz from the sixties and seventies, e.g. tunes by Johnny Dyani, Abdullah Ibrahim, Dudu Pukwana, The Malombo Jazz Makers, The Heshoo Beshoo Group, Louis Moholo or Kippie Moeketsie. Cape Doctor proposes a personal and original re-interpretation of this repertoire through original arrangements by Louis Laurain. The group has played concerts in France, Poland and Germany (with Mike Majkowski on bass) e.g. at Pannonica (Nantes), Fondation Suisse (Paris), Jazzkeller/Aufsturz (Berlin), Kulturhauz (Torùn), Jazz Series/Le 34 (Paris).
Almost the same group has also played a concert (with Étienne Ziemniak on drums) dedicated to Don Cherry’s repertoire and another one (with the addition of Pierre-Antoine Badaroux on alto saxophone) dedicated Ornette Coleman’s groups with Dewey Redman.
